I joined the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles as a Live TV Stage Manager. After 20 years experience in the event industry I became a full member in 2013. I have worked on Live TV variety specials here in Los Angeles including The Emmys, The Disneyland 60th Celebration, The American Music Awards, The Radio Disney Music Awards and on prime time series, The Voice and The X Factor.
The Craft of TV
I love the craft of Live TV Production and as an integral part of the directing team, I get the opportunity to be at the coalface of many one off, special television moments. As a Stage Manager you get to work with all departments and run the stage making sure you are the eyes and ears for the director with the talent and the crew.Update
Directing Events & Festivals
I took an advanced diploma in event management in Christchurch, NZ in 2000. The course was industry driven and I worked alongside the Royal NZ Foundation for the Blind’s Event Manager, Brian Keeley. During the course I worked on many events to raise funds for the RNZFB. I joined with other industry leaders and co-created the inaugural events industry conference and named it “Eventing The Future“. That conference still runs today 16 years later and has led to the forming of the NZ Association of Event Professionals.
I became the Festival Director in 2001 of “The Montana Christchurch Winter Carnival”. I was completely responsible for this major event in the Christchurch event pantheon and ran it for 3 years, raising the sponsorship and festival profile by 30%.
2003 brought me the opportunity to project manage and deliver the “Lord of the Rings – Return Of The King Premier” for Wellington City Council running their Red Carpet zone at this 120,000+ world class event.
Music & Tour Management
I arrived in New Zealand in 1991 with my bouzouki attached not knowing if there was any “scene” for Irish traditional music. I found “The Loft Bar” (a now legendary music establishment spawning many of NZs finest trad prog rock groups) in Christchurch and soon started playing sessions with Barrie McDonald and Davy Stuart. I joined the established Celtic fusion group “Rua” and we went on to record a milestone CD “Rua – Live in the Cathedral” to an audience of 1000+. I went on to form Claddagh with Barrie and Davy and also “The Wylde Takafoleys” with two of Rua’s finest – Jimmy McKenzie Young and James Wilkinson.
I started getting calls from groups and musicians that I knew at home in Ireland and the UK who wanted to explore the touring scene in NZ. Music promotion was a natural progression as I had already toured with my own groups and made great contacts nationally. I started “Noteable” in the mid 90’s and that remains a brand that I use to this day. I toured The Emily Smith Band, Lunasa, Alan Kelly, John Carty, Mick Hanly and Grada twice. Music promotion was a great vehicle that led me in full time event management and a Christchurch Degree course in events management.
Siar Design, Coffee, Arts & Music
I have been taking pictures since I bought my first used “Nikon FM” in the 1980’s. I am fascinated about light and how film captures a moment. I have since moved into the digital arena but the passion for light, film, printing and especially landscapes around my home in the West of Ireland is still with me.
Siar is now open on Kinvara Quay. It is where I show my images and curate local artists works. We also offer a great cup of locally roasted coffee.
Small Group Tours
I have been travelling from hemisphere to hemisphere for 25 years and I am proud to have called New Zealand, London, Kinvara and Hollywood my home. I continue to travel between Kinvara and Hollywood and in 2018 I will be launching my small tours business which will provide a small select group of travellers a tailor made tour of Ireland’s West coast concentrating on The Burren region of Co.Clare & South Galway.
We will explore the history, landscape, traditional arts, organic fare and abundant music of this amazing coastline and meet the people who make this land the mecca for people wanting to unplug from their busy lives.
The website will be operational and available to book through in August 2018 for 2019 trips. I will start small with between 2-4 trips in 2018 growing to 6-8 trips per year , each lasting up to 9 days (includes travel).
Come and soak up the light, breath clean air and listen to the sound of the stones…singing. Let the Burren rocks be your muse and encourage your music, writing and well being. Come along with me to The Burren and hear the music of life in its full glory.
